Our First Reaction to Robert Pattinson in ‘The Batman’ Trailer

Last night, DC dropped the first trailer for the heavily anticipated The Batman, starring Robert Pattinson, and the Internet is freaking out about how awesome it looks. This comes after months (or even years!) of speculation and questions about the casting of Twilight-famed British actor Robert Pattinson in the role of the edgy and mysterious Bruce Wayne. For those of us who have always known our beloved RPatz had the acting chops to take on the darker role (hello, Good Time or The Lighthouse, anyone?), this first trailer should provide vindication for Pattinson and put the naysayers in their place. In short, The Batman looks AWESOME. Take a look for yourself and then read onward for our first reactions to the teaser trailer below.

Robert Pattinson Delivers
All of the haters are real quiet today. You all can finally sit down. Because Robert Pattinson freakin’ brings it as Batman. Out of the Bat suit, he was serving us serious misanthropic billionaire vibes as the shadowy Bruce Wayne. Then when he put on the suit (and we saw that smear of smudgy black makeup around his eyes) he became certifiably badass. For real, I got chills (chills!) when he utters, “I’m vengeance.” Batman, let’s go!

It’s a Detective Movie
In a world where superhero movies are heavily action-focused, it is so refreshing to actually have a detective/noir Batman movie. After all, the character of Batman originated as a 1939 Detective Comics (DC, duh) series and is even known by the nickname, the “World’s Greatest Detective.” It’s about freakin’ time that Batman was given the mystery crime thriller treatment.

Catwoman, The Riddler, and Penguin
The trailer allowed us to confirm a host of iconic miscreants and troublemakers that Batman will have to contend with, including Catwoman (Zoë Kravitz), the Riddler (Paul Dano), and Penguin (Colin Ferrell). Although we didn’t actually get a glimpse of Dano’s Riddler in the trailer (only his riddles), we sure as hell got a few shots of Kravitz’s Catwoman and the almost unrecognizable Ferrell as Penguin. And I can’t tell you how grateful I am that we’re not getting another Joker iteration.

Haunting Music By Nirvana
If the trailer’s backing track of Nirvana’s “Something In The Way” is indicative of anything, The Batman is going to be grim. The song was written by Kurt Cobain to convey the things he’d had to do to fend for himself and survive through the night after his mother had kicked him out and, with The Batman co-writer Mattson Tomlin already confirming that the film will explore Bruce Wayne’s trauma, we can expect that this one’s going to get dark.

Something Different
As alluded to above, I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve seen a Batman movie trailer where the title character utters the infamous, “I’m Batman” line. So when a goon shouts, “The hell are you supposed to be?” in the trailer, I could feel my eyes starting to roll as I braced myself for the same, repetitive introductory line. Instead, we were treated to a fantastic little clip of Batman effortlessly roughing up said goon and then uttering the new and improved, “I’m vengeance.” YES. If that subtle deviation is any indication, this is going to be a very different type of Batman movie.

The Batman is set to be released in October 2021.
